The purpose of The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Red Shield Services Emergency and Transitional Housing Facility (Red Shield Shelter) is to provide strategic intervention, refuge and safe lodging for homeless men, women and families with children in crisis. Our focus is to provide emergency, transitional and recovery programs that empower people of all ages to begin their transition to stable independence; by discovering and overcoming the root causes of their homelessness.
Philosophy of Care
The philosophy of our facility is to treat all people with dignity and respect. We care through presence, relationship, participation and prevention. We seek to address the emotional and spiritual concerns of the whole person. We faithfully believe that strength and capacity for change are inherent within each individual and within society, and that people and communities can affect their own future. Accordingly, we continuously adapt to a changing environment, create new solutions and approaches that work, and disregard those that do not. We aspire to provide the highest quality of which enables achievement of measurable and sustainable results.
HOUSING PROGRAMS PROVIDED:
Cold Weather Program: When the weather is below 40 degrees and if the applicant is not intoxicated.
Emergency Assessment Program: Individual applicants can access this program for a 30 day stay, once in a twelve month period. Applicants must be homeless, and need to present a valid form of identification.
Family Emergency Program: Applicants must be the head of household with documented proof of custody of children. Applicants can stay up to 60 days, once in a twelve month period. Applicants must present a valid form of identification.
Supportive Emergency Program: Applicants can stay up to six months, must be homeless, need to present two forms of identification and must have an income or sponsorship.
Re-entry Program: Applicants can stay up to three months and must be referred by the State Board of Pardons and the Paroles Housing Coordinator.
Special Needs: Applicants can stay up to one year, must be homeless, need to present two forms of identification and must have an income or sponsorship. This program is targeted towards those with mental or physical disabilities as well as people living with HIV+ and AIDS.
Savings Program: Applicants can stay up to one year, must be homeless, need to present two forms of identification and must have an income. This program is targeted towards those who are willing to save 40% of their income in a monitored savings account.
Harbor Light Drug Treatment: Applicants are entered into a 90-day program, must be homeless or referred through U.S. District Courts, must have qualifying medical paperwork prior to entry (call for details) and must complete a screening interview prior to entry. Most beds are fee based, some are free or sponsored.
Rapid Rehousing Programs: Rapid Rehousing programs are designed to provide services to those who are in need of obtaining permanent housing or maintaining current housing. These services include financial assistance and a referral to the Furniture Bank (if needed), determined on a case by case basis. The Home Again program provides assistance to families that are categorized as either homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, or are at imminent risk of losing their current housing. The Housing Stability program provides assistance to singles that are currently residing within The Salvation Army Red Shield Services on a referral bases. The DeKalb Rehousing program provides assistance after a coordinated assessment with security and utility deposits.
Family Transitional Program: Applicants must be the head of household with documented proof of custody of children. Families can stay up to one-year, and must have income or sponsorship. Married couples must provide marriage certificate.
Veterans on the Move: Applicants can stay up to two years and must be referred through the Veterans Administration Homeless Program.
